A Remarkable Anniversary: Sixty years in the same post.

Thursday 23 February will see the celebration of a remarkable anniversary at All Saints’ Church in Lime Walk, Headington.  On the same day sixty years ago, the church witnessed the Licensing and Induction of the Reverend James Cocke as Vicar.  Already the country’s longest serving vicar, he has now reached another significant milestone.

All Saints’ is marking this extraordinary achievement with two special services.  The first will be on the evening of Thursday the 23rd when The Very Reverend Professor Dr Martyn Percy, the Dean of Christ Church Oxford, will preach at a Sung Eucharist.  The service will begin at 8.00 pm and amongst the guests will be the Right Honourable Andrew Smith M.P. for Oxford East.

On the Sunday immediately following the anniversary (26th February) the preacher at The Sung Eucharist at 10.00 am will be The Right Reverend and the Right Honourable the Lord Williams of Oystermouth, Master of Magdalene College, Cambridge and Lord Archbishop of Canterbury 2002-2012.  Amongst the guests at this Service of Thanksgiving for the Vicar’s Ministry will be the Lord Lieutenant of Oxfordshire and Mrs Tim Stevenson, the Lord Mayor of Oxford and Mrs Altaf Khan, and the Chairman of Oxfordshire County Council and Mrs Michael Waine.  The church will also be welcoming many relations and friends of the Vicar and former members of his congregation who now live outside Oxford.

In his latest letter to his parishioners James Cocke sets out the plans for the celebrations. His concluding paragraph states:

‘One of the best traditions of Wells (Somerset) Theological College, where I was trained for the Sacred Ministry of the Church, was the cultivation of a willingness to pursue the job without drawing undue attention to self.  It is my hope that the Worship at the end of February will be offered for the Glory of God and for the good of his people in our part of Oxford.  Any good which I may have done during the last 60 years has been entirely due to the Grace of God and the generous help which I have received from so many for such a long time.

Other events that are happening over the celebration weekend include a coffee morning and cake sale that the church is hosting to support Project Shoebox Oxford on Saturday 25th from 10.30 am to 12noon.  This charitable project seeks to give practical help women and their families in distress, whether in an Oxfordshire domestic abuse refuge, in a homeless hostel, or as refugees.  As well as coffee and cake, the morning also features a short presentation on the work of Oxfordshire Domestic Abuse Services.

Then members of All Saints will be leading the monthly ecumenical prayer service, Churches Together in Headington Priory Prayers, on Monday 27th February from 7.45 to 8.30 pm at the Priory on Old High Street.

Further details of all these services can be found on our Web Calendar.
