Christmas Services at All Saints

posted by All Saints' Highfield   [ updated ]

As Christmas falls on a Wednesday this year, our services over the holiday period start on Sunday 22nd at 6pm with the Festival Service of Nine Lessons and Carols.  Then on Tuesday 24th, our popular Christmas Crib and Christingle Service takes place at 4pm.  This is an informal service for all the family and lasts for about 45 minutes.  Then at 11:30pm Midnight Mass heralds the starts of Christmas Day.

At 8am and 12noon, we will have said Holy Communion from the Book of Common Prayer.  At 10am, we will celebrate Sung Eucharist using the Common Worship format.

December Events

As December marks the start of Advent and the church year, it is a good time to get together and socialise.  At All Saints' it starts with the Advent Carol service on Sunday 1st December at 6pm, where we celebrate the theme of "From darkness into light" with a selection of suitable music and readings.

Our informal mid week lunch is being held on Wednesday 4th December at The Britannia Inn, on the corner of Lime Walk and London Road.  All you have to do is turn up, order your food & drink at the bar, then join us for a chat from 12noon onwards. This was an event initially organised for us by Michael Young and inspired by Carol Glasson.
The Headington Singers are holding their popular Christmas Concert on Friday 6th December with a performance of Rossini's "Petite Messe Solennelle". Tickets are available on the door for £12, £10 concessions and children attend for free.

Rossini is best known as a composer of opera (39 of them in fact) but also wrote sacred works including this ‘little solemn mass’. The title is not without irony for the work is neither little nor solemn! Rossini, it seems, knew best how to compose for the theatre and this work is full of ‘drama, pathos, colour and intensity’ with a fugue ‘worthy of Bach’ no less. This performance has four soloists, piano and a wind quintet and is conducted as usual by Sally Mears.
All welcome! Drinks served in the interval.
Our mid week coffee morning and bring & buy book sale will be on Wednesday 18th December 2019 at 10:30. This is an ideal  chance to take a break during the preparations for the Christmas Festivities to meet up for coffee and a chat. This is an opportunity to meet friends from the church as well as local residents and to bring other friends for tea, coffee and good conversation.  All are welcome to join us at this enjoyable mid-week social event.
